About the Wedding

Below we've listed a few pertinent details about the wedding itself, a few events, and most importantly we've detailed the generous contributions by our very special friends.
  • "What do I wear to a wedding in a pub?"

    By Invitation Only

Strangely, some of our friends and relatives have inquired this very thing... well, what do you wear to a wedding in a pub?!

True, John and I have decided to go the "unconventional" route when it comes to our special day. Instead of getting wrapped up in the spectacle and merangue that weddings can sometimes become, we wanted a great big, fun, and warm party that we could all enjoy. We know our ideas for our wedding wouldn't be everyone's choice, and that's OK by us. We decided to have a little fun with our day, and so, the location is just part of the "bent" we have taken on our wedding. We hope you have as much fun as we are planning to have!

So, what do you wear to a wedding a pub? Well, in our books, pretty much what you would wear to any other wedding. We are not asking for, nor are we wearing a top hat and tails (unless you really want to, and that is perfectly OK by us), but regardless of the name of the venue, we are doing up this party as best we can...dresses, high heels, flowers and hair dos! John even bought himself a brand new purple suit!

If you have to ask, then please ask...we would hate for you to show up and be the only underdressed guest in attendance! Please wear what you are comfortable in, and leave the flip flops, bermuda shorts, hawaiian shirts, straw hats, track pants and tank tops for another party.

Top hats and tails are welcome, kilts are encouraged (if you are Scottish), funky dresses are wonderful, suits rock, ties are trendy.

We are looking forward to seeing you on our wedding day!

  • The Marriage of Kathie & John - ta daa!

    By Invitation Only Please

    • The wedding day is approaching even faster than it was when we set up our wedding blog! The invitations have been printed and once the maps are done, the stamps purchased and the mail-outs neatly arranged, addressed and sealed, we will be entrusting Canada Post with our little invitation.

In the interim, here's what we'll let you in on:
      - The ceremony and reception are located in the same venue (yay, no travelling!), and
parking is included. A hotel is nearby for our overnight guests.
      - A cocktail hour will provide time for mingling in between the ceremony and reception.
      - Along with your appetite, bring your dancin' shoes for après dinner festivities!

We're hoping our event is fun, lively and relaxed. Stay tuned for more details and please don't be late or we'll start without you!

Please note, the reception is limiited to big people only, with the exception of immediate family.

  • It takes a Village...Part III (by Kathie, the bride)

So, by now many of our friends and family know that our beloved pooch, Wilson (see photo album) is going to be our ring bearer at the wedding. I know, I know...it sounds silly, but next to each other, Wilson is the most important member of our little family, and somehow our union wouldn't seem the same without him there sharing the day - or at least the vows - with us.

Enter Auntie Heather! Heather is a life-long friend of my sister Lynn and me - our parents were all friends dating back to the early 1950's, and we all grew up feeling more like cousins than we did family friends. Heather now lives in San Diego with her husband Craig, and I'm hopeful she'll be able to join us at the wedding. Among her many wonderful attributes, including a really awesome sense of humour, Heather is an amazing artist, craftsperson, quilter, and she is very generously in the process of hand-making Wilson's duds for the big day. I've seen photos of the work in progress, and I can't wait to see the outfit in person. He will be the best dressed at the wedding, hands...errrr, paws....down!

I've included a photo of Heather that is my absolute favourite, liberated from her Facebook profile page, which was taken when she was a child seated upon her aunt Sylvia's lap. Heather has a wonderful smile and this photo of her completely captures her personality...

    Thanks Auntie Heather!!!

  • It takes a Village...Part II (by Kathie, the bride)

Following along the 'friends and family participation make the day that much better,' enter Jono! Another very good friend and former co-worker of mine from Peterborough, Jono Fiddler, has also, and very kindly, accepted our challenge to contribute to our cause. Pictured here playing the guitar with his current band, Hundred Year Champions, last November at the Spill in Peterborough, we've asked Jono if he would play a tune as I make my way down the aisle.

    Big deal, right?

Well, Jono and the guitar hold a very special place for me.

Many years ago (about 11 or 12, if memory serves), Kathie and Jono decided they would learn how to play the guitar - from scratch. Each picking up a decent (read: cheap) new accoustic guitar, Wednesday's became guitar night at my place, where every seven days we would challenge ourselves to learn more notes, drink a pot of coffee, discuss life and world politics, and with the help of the Internet and downloadable free tablature, we would work on perfecting (or merely getting through) some of our favourite songs. Some of them weren't pretty, and some of them we abandoned to move on to something simpler (after all, Green Day and Jesus and Mary Chain managed to become huge by only playing an average of three chords in any given song). Sometimes, we did really well - there was a great vibe and we, and our guitars, just clicked, and huge strides were made! So confident did we become in our plucking, that we each ran out and purchased an electric guitar and small amp! That's when we really turned up the volume on our musical studies.

Jono and I even had a band name - Ethel Dylan - the story of which will be left for another day. And my electric guitar? Well, her name is Red Ethel, of course!

Those days were fun...and then, a couple years later I moved back to Toronto, and while Wednesday night guitar practice continued, Jono (thankfully) found some new people to strum with.

Since those days, Jono has become really, really good at playing the guitar, while my Red Ethel sits on her stand and looks back at me, as pretty as can be and complete with her pick on the ready; I often long for those Wednesday night guitar nights. And there, she sits - having in recent years taken a back seat in my life to swimming, biking and running, and of course, Ironman. I vow, however, to pick her up again soon - there's just something about creating music that gets you, right down to your soul. I miss that.

    Fast forward to 2009
When it came time for us to think about music and aisle-walking, I didn't need to think twice about what - or rather, who - I wanted to be a part of our special day: Who else but Jono? Flattered at my request, Jono naturally accepted my invitation to strum, however - and this is the MOST EXCITING part, he has started to compose his own tune for our wedding, rather than relying on something by Wagner! Isn't that cool?!

I honestly can't wait! Thank you, Jono! Bring some CD's to sell at the wedding!

  • "It takes a Village"

According to former First Lady Hillary Clinton, it takes a Village to raise a child...

Well, in our case, it takes a Village to plan a Wedding too! Actually, the planning has been pretty fun, and believe me, I'm not complaining. Why I say it takes a Village is because John and I decided we wanted our celebration to include personal touches from our many wonderful friends and family members. We wanted our wedding to be memorable and have as many people "touch" it as possible - our event is your event. It's easy to follow a book, hire a planner, pick things from a catalogue or website...but we wanted to personalize it, and so, as we navigate the planning process leading up to September 5th, I'm hopeful we will accomplish this.

    the Invitation

I'm really thrilled that my long-time friend and graphic designer, Jeff Macklin - pictured here with his wife, Krista, in the background, is designing and hand-printing our wedding invitations. A good friend dating back to my years living and working in Peterborough, Jeff is very cool, very fun, and very creative! We can't wait to see the final copy of our invitations, and if they're anything like the bathing suit Jeff recently (and very kindly) designed for me online at custom swimwear company "Splish," our invites will be very eye-catching. (Stay tuned for a photo of my new bathing suit - when I'm having a 'thin' day.)

A few years ago, Jeff picked up one, and then a second antique hand letter press, and has turned his once utilitarian garage into an amazing print studio. Through is company Jackson
Creek Press, Jeff makes some very funky posters, cards, numbered prints, and now wedding invitations - just about anything! I also recommended Jeff's work to a friend from the Running Room, Amy Davidson, who is getting married in July at a winery in Jordan, ON. I'm almost as excited to see Amy's invites as I am to see ours!

Please drop by Jeff's blog, leave him a note, place an order, and you can even watch as our invitations come to life!
